Description The propensity of the coal towards spontaneous heating is most needed parameters for strategic planning of coal extraction. Various researchers have defined the propensity of coal and derived methods for its determination. The authors have derived an analytical model based on intrinsic factors of coal like fix carbon, volatile matter, moisture content, ash content and crossing point temperature. Under the study an attempts have also been made to correlate these factors with the liability index of coal. This may be a tool for the categorizing the coal in respect of susceptibility of coal towards spontaneous heating.
