In the present study coal combustion residue samples from Chandrapura Thermal Power Station were collected and analysed for their long-term leaching behaviour. This paper also addresses the physico-chemical characteristics of the CCRs. The aim of the study is to provide the basic scientific data for bulk utilization of CCR and for reducing environmental pollution. Four different methodologies have been used for the leaching study providing different conditions for leaching to occur. The results of analysis of leachates from open column percolation experiment, ASTM shake test and acid digest test establishers that CCRs from Chandrapura Thermal Power Station are environmentally benign with respect to leaching of trace elements/heavy metals. Open column percolation experiment is the best among all the four leaching methodologies as it simulates the situation that can be expected in the field. Leachates of open column percolation experiment were analysed for 23 elements. Of the 23 elements studied only 9, such as iron, lead, magnesium, calcium, copper, zinc, manganese, sodium and potassium were observed in the leachates. Elements, such as chromium, nickel, cobalt, cadmium, selenium, aluminium, silver, arsenic, boron, barium, vanadium, antimony, molybdenum and mercury were all below the detection limit in the entire study period. Overall this study on CCR samples demonstrate that the samples of Chandrapura Thermal Power Station can be disposed to landfill sites and utilized as a fill material in mines in an environmentally benign way without any fear of contamination of surface water and ground water of the region.
