Description |
The paper deals with geotechnical study and optimum slope design of a proposed opencast mine in Jharkhand state of India. For this purpose geotechnical studies were conducted in the field and laboratory. Physicomechanical properties the core samples of four boreholes, drilled for the purpose, were determined. The mine is characterized by schistose rocks, which are jointed. The rock discontinuities were mapped on the exposures available along the hill slopes at the proposed site. Geotechnical mapping was undertaken to determine the critical orientation of structural discontinuities. The hydrological study was also conducted to know the existing groundwater condition in the area.
After identifying kinematically possible failure modes, detailed slope stability analysis has been carried out by limit equilibrium method, The 120m high slopes may be designed with 47º overall slope angle based on the present study. The overall slope angle for 150 m deep pit should be 44º
