Description Explosives may sometimes undergo deflagration instead of detonation under the situation which may arise during their actual usage specially in delay blasting. Chances of deflagration with P5 permitted explosives are more because of these explosives are weakest of all the permitted explosives. Deflagrations of permitted explosives pose a grave hazard in underground coal mines where there is danger of methane or coal dust explosion. Therefore, only non-deflagrating type of P5 permitted explosives are allowed for use in underground coal mines. Deflagration characteristics of permitted P5 explosives of all three types (NG-based, slurry & emulsion) were studied in the laboratory in two different experimental set-ups namely, Audibert Delmas Apparatus (ADA) and Modified Long Cannon (MLC), under varying conditions. Results of studies were analyzed to compare the severity of the methods as well as proneness towards deflagration of different types of explosives and finally selection of standard laboratory method for assessment of deflagration propensity of P5 explosives.
