Annexins were discovered approximately 31 years ago. They were first discovered in plants (tomato) by Boustead et al. (1989), however, the name ‘Annexin’ was proposed for
this superfamily in 1990. Annexins are a multigene, multifunctional family of soluble proteins with a broad taxonomic distribution. Over 200 unique annexin sequences have been described in more than 65 species covering plants, fungi, protists, higher vertebrates and recently in a prokaryote (Gerke and Moss 2002; Hofmann 2004; Moss and Morgan.
