Description Studies on physico chemical parameters of underground mine water, OCP direct discharge and sump water of Sayal ā€˜Dā€™ Block Colliery of South Karanpura Coalfield of Central Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited were carried out in 2004 and 2005 in all the three seasons, namely Summer, Monsoon and Winter. On the scruitiny of the data it was found that the colour of the water samples were turbid, pH of these waters were acidic ranging from 5.0 to 6.9, Total dissolved solids varied between 150 and 720 mg/L, Total suspended solids ranged between 91 and 325 mg/L, dissolved oxygen is within the range 5 to 7,8 mg/L, biological oxygen demand of these water samples is in the order 4.5 to 9.9 mg/L, chemical oxygen demand lie between 55 and 78 mg/L, COD to BOD ratio of all the three water samples are beyond 3 making the water unsafe for human consumption and hence pretreatment is essential to make it potable water. The nitrate ion concentration is abnormally high. The hardness varied from 135 to 425 mg/L as calcium carbonate. The ions present were chloride, fluoride, sulphate, calcium and magnesium for which analyses were done. Oil and grease were also found to be present as usual.
