Description Studies on physico chemical parameters of underground mine water and sump water of khas karanpura colliery of South Karanpura Coalfield of Central Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of coal India Limited were carried out in 2004 and 2005 in all the three seasons, namely summer, Monsoon and Winter. On careful examination of the data thus collected, it was revealed that the colour of the two water samples were turbid, pH of these waters varied from 7.64 to 9.21, that is alkaline in nature contrary to those of Urimari area and Sayal ‘D’ Block, conductivity ranged from 0.588 to 0.697, total suspended solid occurred between 35 and 61 mg/L, total dissolved solids varied between 350 and 415 mg/L dissolved Oxygen was found to be in the range 5.3 and 6.8 mg/L, chemical oxygen demand varied between 22 and 36 mg/L, biological oxygen demand ranged from 3.2 to 6.3 mg/L COD to BOD ratio was more than 3 making the water unsafe for human consumption and need treatment before it is used as potable water, hardness as calcium carbonate showed variation from 178 to 315 mg/L, no carbonate and hydroxide alkalinity was found, alkalinity M ranged from 18 to 270, chloride varied from 27.5 to 48 mg/L, fluoride ranged from 0.968 to 1.316 mg/L, nitrate occurred from 0.592 to 1.123 mg/L, sulphate’s presence was from 36 to 72 mg/L, calcium from 36 to 48 mg/L, magnesium from 3.2 to 7.1 mg/L and oil and grease from 0.30 to 0.48 mg/L.
