Description The detailed studies on physico chemical parameters of underground mine water, OCP direct discharge and sump water of Urimari colliery of South Karanpura Coalfield of Central Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited were studied. In 2004 and 2005 in all the three seasons viz. summer, monsoon and winter. The results thus obtained formed the basis of this paper. :On careful scruitiny of the data collected it was found that the water was turbid, pH of mine waste water is within theacceptable range between 7.1 and 7.6, total dissolved solid ranged between 595-128 mg/l i.e mostly it is in the acceptable range of 500 mg/l total suspended solids ranged between 625-42 mg/l, hardness was found to vary within 445-153 i.e. within permissible limit, dissolved oxygen is within the range 7.51 to 5.24 mg/l, biological oxygen demand of mine water is within the range 6.80 – 2.20 mg/l which is permissible, chemical oxygen demand is in the range 53-20 mg/l, the COD to BOD ratio of all the samples of water is much higher than 3. Such waters are unsafe for human consumption and hence treatment is essential to make it potable water. The nitrate ion concentration is within the range of 45 mg/l.
