Description Indian has paved a long way in the area of explosive manufacturing and is about five decades old. In this short span, it has made rapid progress both in terms of quantity and introduction of latest world class technologies for explosives as well as initiating systems. Now, there are about 60 manufacturers with surplus licenced and installed capacity for all types of explosive products. With the substantial cost-advantage due to cheap labour availability, India is making stride in the international compettion for export of their quality explosive products. Explosives being hazardous in nature, they need to meet the national as well as international norms set for their safe transport during export purposes. Now, most of the countries follow the United Nations Recommendations for Transport of Dangerous Goods (UNRTDG). On request from indigenous manufacturers, CIM&FR (formerly CMRI) took the initiative and established national facility for thermal stability test and 12m drop test for assessing the suitability of explosive products for their classification as per UN Recommendations for Transport of Dangerous Goods under Class 1. This paper deals in brief with the guidelines for UN classification of explosive products, test set-up established at CIM&FR and results of trails with plain detonators.
