Description Underground coal mines are considered hazardous due to many reasons , and one of them is presence of mine methane and coal dust forming explosive atmosphere. The use of electricity in the coal mines cannot be safe if electrical equipment is not protected against possible risk of fire and explosion due to arcing, sparking or hot surfaces. Different protection techniques are sued to design electrical equipment for their safe operation in such explosive areas, and one of them is flameproof protection. Majority of electrical equipment in the underground coal mines are having flameproof design features. The flameproof equipment are designed to sustain an explosion occurred inside the enclosure. During the service, maintaining protection requirement of flameproof equipment is mandatory to prevent any failure of the same. The present paper describes the design requirements associated with safety and possible causes of failure of flameproof equipment in coalmines.
