Subject Structural Biology & Bioinformatics

Description A huge amount of research is devoted to discovering, developing and commercializing new pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals from natural products. Research programs are focused on the discovery of bioactive natural products and their derivatives useful as anti-infective, anticancer and immunomodulatory/ anti-inflammatory drugs. Biotechnology plays a major role in the search for biologically active natural products from plants and other sources. Significant advances have been made in commercialization of biobased products, bioprocessing of agricultural feedstocks, creation of new types of agricultural crops, advances in food ingredients and flavorings, new ways to make pharmaceuticals, industrial biotechnology, the convergence of nanotechnology and biotechnology and conversion of waste streams to value-added products using biochemical or biologically-mediated processes with the goal of reducing true process waste. These advances have come about because of applications involving genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics that are being applied.
