Description Copper(I) ions in a silica glass upon irradiation either with UV (4-5 cV) or with high energy photons like gamma-ray are found to produce copper-related electron deficient species in the matrix. In the case of UV irradiation, formation of isolated divalent copper species has been clearly revealed, while in the case or gamma-irradiation, generation or a copper related ionized center or he type [AlO4-/Cu++](+) is evident. The difference observed in the effect of photons of two different energies on the system has been ascribed to two different modes of electron movement in the matrix under the two different energetic irradiations of the glass. The importance of the phenomenon with reference to its applications in opto-electronics and optical sensing has been discussed.
