Description This paper presents the study of PZT-macrofiber and polyimide composite namely macrofiber composite (MFC) using distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber cavity laser. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is an important tool which can be used to characterize MFC for various sensor and actuator applications. The thermal properties, structural morphology and response time with the application of voltage were studied in order to understand the sensitivity of strain coefficient (d(33)) for expansion of MFC directed towards poling axis. The response sensitivity of lasing wavelength shift with respect to time for a particular driving voltage on MFC actuators is an important issue to get reliable and reproducible results. The different sizes of MFC have been analyzed at particular voltage for various time intervals up to 30 min. The results reveal the behaviors of PZT crystal with driving voltage are illustrated through changes of lasing wavelength in Bragg reflector fiber cavity laser experiment. The possible behaviors of PZT crystal with voltage have been discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
