Description A simple, rapid, highly sensitive and selective spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of fluoride present in glass. The sample is decomposed at low temperature with NaOH and interfering species such as silica are separated as zinc silicate and alumina by extraction with TBP (tri-n-butyl phosphate) plasticized polyurethane foam (PUF). The amount of fluoride in the aqueous medium is subsequently determined spectrophotometrically based on the mixed ligand complex of thorium fluoride-alizarin complexone. The molar absorptivity was calculated to be 1.79x10(3) l mol(-1) cm(-1). The method obeys Beer's law in the range 0.20-20.0 mu g F/ml. The developed method has been successfully applied to different glasses.
