Description The basic function of blasting is to break the rock and to displace it into a muckpile. In any, fragmentation can be improved or deteriorated if burden, spacing and explosive distribution in the boreholes are changed. A common practice to achieve optimum blast design is the trial and error method. In this paper an approach is dealt with showing how optimum blast conditions were achieved by single hole blasting during two field investigation. The method used involve blasting of only one hole at a time at successively increasing burdens. Post-blast results of all holes indicated formation of a triangular bench crater. Angel of breakage, back break and the maximum fragment size were recorded after blasting at various burdens. Optimum production blasts were designed based on the results of single hole blasting.
