Description High carcinogenicity of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) ubiquitous in the environment has generated a great interest in the development of improved and more rapid analytical techniques for identification and quantification of the carcinogens adsorbed on to supended particulate matters. Chief aim of this review paper is to highlight their metabolism and to illustrate the conventional procedures of complete analysis of PAHs. Analysis procedure consists of collection of particulate matters on inert filter, extraction of the hydrocarbons, isolation of the desired portion of the extract by various chromatographic techniques, like HPTLC, gas chromatography and simultaneously the detection of the interested compounds form various spectrometric techniques.
