Description Rope failures are common and most hazardous incidents in collieries. The paper intends to investigate the condition of steel rope wires with special reference to tensile strength and torsion under three states of deterioration of steel rope wires such as (a) failed rope wires; (b) surface of rope wires deteriorated in service but not failed ; (c) newly installed steel rope wires with least surface deterioration. Under these three conditions, it is observed that the behaviour of tensile strength and torsion is functionally related and it led to the determination of analytical relationship.
