Description Derivatographic method has been employed to indentify and estimate clay minerals associated with Indian coals. This technique of instrumental method has been used on the mineral residue after coaly matter has been removed by incineration in air at the temperature range 370 ± 10ºC and oxidation with hydrogen peroxide. The identification of major clay mineral has been made by differential thermal analysis in conjunction with X-ray diffractometry and its quantitative evaluation by thermogravimetry. Derivative thermogravimetry (D.T.G.) has been found to be helpful in detecting the presence of other hydrated aluminosilicate minerals. It has been observed that the principal and most commonly occurring clay mineral associated with Indian coals is kaolinite. This is also indirectly confirmed by (total SiO2-free SiO2) / Al2O3 of the mineral residue.
