Description |
In percussive drilling energy is imparted by a striking hammer to a drill rod. This energy is propagated along the rod in the form of stress pulse until it reaches the bit end, and part is then utilized in rock breakage under the bit. The rest is reflected energy which is largely wasted. The problem involves a complete understanding of the mechanism of bit penetration into rock and also the mechanical process by which the energy is transmitted from the piston along the drill rod and the bit to the rock. However, both of the above mechanisms are obscured in enormous complexities. Such complexities have inhibited the detailed study of these processes and therefore, in fact, very little published information on these details is available. By making simplified assumptions of various degrees, only a few approximate theories of bit penetration mechanism have been put forward by some authors, but they were largely criticized for being too hypothetical Similarly although very recently the stress wave mechanics of percussive drilling have been well investigated conflicting views on many of the various wave behavious still persist.
