Description 6 vegetable oils (i) mustard, (ii) coconut, (iii) gingelly, (iv) groundnut, (v) sunflower and (vi) castor, each at 0.05, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5% levels was mixed with green gram to control the breeding of Callosobruchus chinensis. (i), (vi) and (iii) at 0.3% level; (iv) and (ii) at 0.5% level prevented the multiplication of C. chinensis, but (v) was not effective even at 0.5%. The ovicidal activity of the oils was confirmed by its effect on embryonic development of egg, lack of larval entrance holes on seeds and absence of contractile movement of embryo in the egg shell after 2-3 days of oviposition. Germination of green gram was not affected by oil treatment.
