Description Alpha-amylase production by Bacillus licheniformis M27 in submerged fermentation was reduced from 480 to 30 units/ml when soluble starch concn. in medium was increased from 0.2 to 1.0%. In contrast in a solid state fermentation system, enzyme production increased 29-fold with a 42-fold increase in the concn. of soluble starch and other starchy substrates. Regulation of enzyme formation by end-products in submerged fermentation is suggested to be responsible for differences in fermentation characteristics. [From En summ.]
