The influence of five species of fungi of the genus Aspergillus on the breeding success of Sitophilus oryzae (L.) in stored sorghum grain was investigated in the laboratory in India. When groups of 30 adult weevils were confined for 45 days with 100 g grain that had become covered with a growth of A. flavus, A. ochraceus, A. nidulans, A. ruber and A. versicolor, the number of adults that emerged in the next generation averaged 9, 189, 270, 370 and 476, respectively, as compared with 249 on grain with no fungus growth. It is concluded that A. flavus inhibited and A. versicolor and A. ruber promoted breeding success in S. oryzae. In further tests, the inhibitory effect of five isolates of A. flavus was investigated. For isolates of the fungus derived from Corcyra cephalonica (Stnt.), groundnuts, rice, S. oryzae and maize, the number of adults obtained averaged 4, 15, 67, 83 and 395, respectively, as compared with 177 for grain without fungus growth.
