Description In order to study the effect of incorporation of lactulose, a bifidus factor in infant milk formulas, a series of experiments were carried out with different concn. of lactulose in milk or the formulas. Weanling rats were fed on the formulas and faecal and caecal flora, pH and growth rate of the animals were determined. No significant differences in bifidobacteria or coliforms were observed in rats due to incorporation of lactulose in the formulas during a period of 3 wk. However, after 5 wk, infant formulas containing 0.5% lactulose caused a significant decrease in faecal pH and an increase in bifidobacteria.
